Zion National Park: The Ultimate Guide for Your Home on Wheels

Red Rocks, Real Comfort: Everything You Need to Know for Your Perfect Zion Adventure

As you pilot your Moto Nation rig through the red-rock corridors of Southern Utah, there is one destination that stands as the ultimate crown jewel: Zion National Park. In May, Zion is a masterpiece of emerald-green hanging gardens set against 2,000-foot crimson cliffs. The weather is perfection—warm enough for shorts on the trail but cool enough for a cozy campfire in the evening.

RV-Friendly Basecamps: Where to Park Your Rig

Finding the right spot to park your “home on wheels” is key to a stress-free adventure. Zion offers a mix of in-park proximity and luxury resort amenities nearby:

  • Watchman Campground (In-Park): Located right inside the South Entrance, this is the gold standard for RVers. It offers electric hookups and puts you steps away from the shuttle system. Note: Reservations open 6 months in advance and disappear fast!

  • Zion River Resort (Luxury): Just 20 minutes outside the park in Virgin, UT, this is perfect for those who want full hookups, a pool, and a sauna after a long day of hiking.

  • Zion Ponderosa Ranch: Located on the “back side” near the East Entrance, this resort offers a high-elevation retreat with full hookups and tons of onsite activities like horseback riding.

Zion in May: Best Hikes for Every Level

May is a “Goldilocks” month for Zion—the spring runoff has usually calmed down, and the summer heat hasn’t yet peaked.

  • The Narrows (via Riverside Walk): As long as the water levels from snowmelt have dropped, wading through the Virgin River between thousand-foot canyon walls is a life-changing experience.

  • Angels Landing: For the adrenaline seekers! This hike offers the most iconic view in the park. Remember: A permit is now required to hike the “chain” section to the summit.

  • Canyon Overlook Trail: Only a mile long, this moderate hike on the east side of the tunnel provides a massive payoff with panoramic views of the entire canyon.

Refueling: Best Eats in Springdale

The town of Springdale sits right at the park’s doorstep and is a foodie’s paradise.

  • Oscar’s Café: A local legend. Grab a “Garbage Burger” or a massive burrito on their outdoor patio. It’s the ultimate post-hike reward.

  • Zion Pizza & Noodle Co.: Located in a converted church, this spot is perfect for carb-loading with creative wood-fired pizzas.

  • Deep Creek Coffee Co.: The best way to start your morning. Grab a specialty latte and a breakfast burrito before heading to the visitor center.

Know Before You Go: Fast Facts & History

Zion wasn’t always “Zion.” Originally named Mukuntuweap (meaning “straight canyon”) by the Southern Paiute people, it was renamed by Mormon pioneers who felt the towering cliffs resembled a celestial city.

  • The Shuttle is Your Friend: From March through November, private vehicles are not allowed on the main Scenic Drive. Park your RV at your campsite or the dedicated “Oversized Vehicle” lot at the Visitor Center and ride the free shuttle!

  • Engineering Marvels: The Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel, finished in 1930, was blasted through solid sandstone. RV Alert: If your camper is over 11’4” tall or 7’10” wide, you’ll need a “tunnel escort” (a small fee) to ensure safe passage.

  • Wildlife Watch: Keep an eye out for California Condors soaring above the cliffs—Zion is one of the few places on Earth where you can see these massive birds in the wild.

Moto Nation Tip: May is one of Zion’s busiest months. We recommend arriving at the park entrance before 8:00 AM to secure oversized parking if you aren’t staying in the park. Ready to go? Your red-rock adventure is waiting.
